STARLIGHT, IN (WAVE) – Bourbon is definitely Kentucky's drink, but it's a myth that it can only be produced in the Bluegrass state. Soon Huber's Orchard and Winery will be selling its' own spirits.

"This has been something our family has been committed to do," said Ted Huber, Master Distiller/Co-owner.

Since 2001 the Starlight Distillery at Huber's Orchard and Winery has been creating spirits they weren't allowed to share with the community due to Indiana law.

Unlike breweries and wineries, Indiana distillers could not offer samples for tasting or sell by the glass or bottle - that is until now.

Huber says the family owned farm worked closely with State Representative Ed Clere [(R) New Albany], over the last few years to make their dream a reality.

"We've seen what an impact wineries and breweries have made in economic development and revitalization throughout the state and there is the potential to do the same thing with distillers," said Clere.

Clere authored the bill to do just that and the starlight distillery was the first in the state to receive its license.

"Huber's had almost 600,000 visitors last year and this is another growth opportunity to continue to drive more tourism and with the tourism comes investment and expansion and jobs," said Clere.

"We want to have the full experience of people coming onto the property and seeing the actual crops being grown here on the property and the full affect of the agriculture all the way to the finished product in the glass," said Huber.

You won't be able to get the spirits just yet, because this takes some time vodka will be the first available. Huber's Orchard and Winery hopes to have it on the shelves this summer followed by whiskey and then bourbon.
