LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The University of Louisville women's basketball player who collapsed during Tuesday's game against Missouri State has been benched for the season after being diagnosed with a blood clot in her lung.
Head coach Jeff Walz made the announcement during a Friday afternoon news conference. He said guard Antonita Slaughter could be released from the hospital later on Friday.
Slaughter started for the Cards in Tuesday night's game against the Lady Bears at the KFC Yum! Center, but was subbed out after a little over two minutes into the first half.
Slaughter took a seat on the bench, then with a about 17 minutes left in the first half, she slumped over and began to have an episode similar to a seizure.
According to UofL Athletic spokesperson Kim Pemberton, Slaughter was taken to Jewish Hospital where doctors performed tests to find out what caused her to collapse. Pemberton said she was conscious and able to answer questions.
Despite the traumatic episode, Slaughter's teammates were able to pull out a 91-49 win.
Slaughter, who averages 10 points a game, is a senior at UofL and attended high school at Christian Academy of Louisville. Her ability to do it all on the court earned her a scholarship from the university. She comes from a basketball family, including her brother A.J. who played at Western and now plays professionally in France.
