LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Avoiding frozen water lines inside your home is critical with temperatures below freezing and heading lower.

"You've got cold water coming into a warm house and sometimes pipes just break," said Kelley Dearing Smith of the Louisville Water Company.

To keep that from happening in your home, the Louisville Water Company suggests you wrap exposed pipes with insulating material and open cabinets to let in some warm air. Pipes under kitchen sinks, in crawl spaces, near windows or in unheated basements are all susceptible to freezing.

If your house has a crawl space, cover the outside vents to prevent winter winds from getting in. And keep the garage door closed if you have a slab foundation since some water pipes are located under concrete floors in the garage.

If your pipes burst it can turn into a mess quick. So one of the things you have to do is figure out where your water shut off valve is and mark it so you can find it in a hurry.

Dearing Smith said you can also stop by the water company and pick up a reflector that glows in the dark.

"A lot of  times pipes burst at night and these are located in dark places," Dearing Smith explained.

Louisville Water Company is doing its own preps, winterizing the city's 24,000 public fire hydrants  to make sure there are no issues in case of a fire.

The water company is also keeping an eye on its own system, watching for water main breaks. But Dearing Smith expects that's more of a threat when temperatures stay below freezing for an extended period of time.
