Know Before You Go: Week of December 16

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The following traffic restrictions and changes will be in effect this week due to the construction of the downtown and east end bridges.

Downtown Crossing Traffic Information

  • Work Currently Underway in Louisville:

Jackson Street from Jefferson Street to Market Street is scheduled to be closed through Monday, December 16 for work on a storm sewer.

Floyd Street from Liberty Street to Muhammad Ali Boulevard is scheduled to be closed through Monday, December 23 for pile driving.

The right lane of westbound Witherspoon Street from River Road to Adams Street is scheduled to be closed through Saturday, December 21 for work on a retaining wall.

The right lane and right parking lane on eastbound Market Street from Jackson Street to Hancock Street are scheduled to be closed through Saturday, December 21 for work on a retaining wall.

The right lane and right parking lane on Preston Street from Market Street to Liberty Street are scheduled to be closed through Saturday, December 21 for pile driving.

The left lane and both parking lanes on Jefferson Street from Jackson Street to Preston Street are scheduled to be closed through Saturday, December 21 for pile driving and excavation work.

The right lane and left lane of Liberty Street from Floyd Street to Preston Street are scheduled to be closed through Saturday, December 21 for excavation and demolition work.

  • Work scheduled for this week on the Kentucky side:

Work scheduled for Monday, December 16:

Rolling closures are expected overnight Monday, December 16 on I-65 north and I-65 south from the Kennedy Bridge to Muhammad Ali Boulevard for pothole patching. Work will begin around 9 p.m. with all lanes open by 5 a.m.

Rolling closures are expected overnight Monday, December 16 on I-64 east and I-64 west from 22nd Street to Story Avenue for pothole patching. Work will begin around 9 p.m. with all lanes open by 5 a.m.

Work scheduled for Tuesday, December 17:

Rolling closures are expected overnight Tuesday, December 17 on I-71 north and I-71 south from the merge with I-64 to just east of Frankfort Avenue for pothole patching. Work will begin around 9 p.m. with all lanes open by 5 a.m.

The left lane of I-64 west from Story Avenue to the I-65 exit is scheduled to close overnight Tuesday, December 17 for work on a temporary barrier wall. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.

The right lane of the ramp from I-71 south to I-65 south is scheduled to close overnight Tuesday, December 17 for mill and overlay work. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.

Work scheduled for Wednesday, December 18:

The right lane of I-65 south from the approach to the Kennedy Bridge to Main Street is scheduled to close overnight Wednesday, December 18 for work on a temporary barrier wall. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.

The left lane of I-64 east from 3rd Street to just east of the I-71 north exit is scheduled to close overnight Wednesday, December 18 for work on a temporary barrier wall. It's expected to close around 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m.

 

Traffic change expected on Monday, December 16:

  • Work scheduled for this week on the Indiana side:

UPDATE: Drivers will yield, instead of merging onto 10th Street from I-65 North in Jeffersonville.  The new traffic pattern was expected to take effect Monday, December 16, but has been postponed until after the first of the year.

  • Continuing closures and restrictions on the Kentucky side:

The ramp from I-64 east to I-65 south closed July 15 and is scheduled to be closed through the spring of 2016.

The right lane of I-65 south from the Jefferson Street ramp to Muhammad Ali Boulevard closed July 15 and is scheduled to be closed through 2016.

  • Continuing closures and restrictions on the Indiana side:

Broadway Street has closed from Court Avenue to 6th Street. This includes the closure of the 6th Street ramp to I-65 north. These are permanent closures.

7th Street has closed from Missouri Avenue to Broadway Street. This is a permanent closure.

VFW Boulevard has closed from 7th Street to 9th Street. This is a permanent closure.

US 31-South (Exit Ramp 1) from Brown Station Way to Stansifer Avenue has been reduced to two lanes.

US 31-South in the area just south of Stansifer Avenue has been reduced to one lane. Vehicles are still able to exit onto 10th Street.

The northbound collector distributor ramp in Jeffersonville has been reduced to one lane between 10th Street and Stansifer Avenue. The closure will be in place through late 2015.

The actual starting date and duration for the work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur. Also, given the aggressive overall construction schedule for the project, Walsh DBT may shift work schedules when opportunities arise. East End Crossing Traffic Information

  • Kentucky: Lane restrictions on U.S. 42 on December 16 and 17:

The left lanes of U.S. 42 northbound and southbound in Kentucky will be restricted in the vicinity of the U.S. 42 and KY 841/Gene Snyder Freeway intersection on December 16 and 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Drivers can to continue to use U.S. 42 northbound and southbound during this time. Residents are asked to use caution and drive slowly when driving in the area during this time.

  • Kentucky: Lane switch on KY 841/Gene Snyder Freeway beginning December 17:

Southbound KY 841/Gene Snyder Freeway will be shifted east just north of the I-71 interchange and shifted back to its normal route after the interchange via temporary pavement beginning December 17. This arrangement will likely continue for about nine months.

  • Kentucky: Lane switch on Springdale Rd beginning December 17:

Traffic on current Springdale Road alignment will be shifted onto a new alignment at the intersection of Wolf Pen Branch Road via temporary pavement beginning December 17.

  • Kentucky: Blasting schedule for week of December 16:

Blasting to prepare for the new tunnel in the east end of Louisville is scheduled to occur near the intersection of U.S. 42 and KY 841 during the week of December 16.

The dates and approximate times (within 15 minutes) will be:

Monday, December 16: 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.
Tuesday, December 17: 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.
Wednesday, December 18: 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.
Thursday, December 19: 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.
Friday, December 20: 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.

Prior to each blast, traffic must be stopped for 5 to 20 minutes for the safety of the workers and the traveling public. Traffic stops during the blasts will occur on KY 841 between Wolf Pen Branch Road and U.S. 42 and on U.S. 42 between Wolf Pen Branch Road and Bridgepointe Boulevard. In the event of unfavorable weather or other unforeseen activities, blast times may occasionally change.

NOTE: A message will be posted on the project website at http://kyinbridges.com/ Thursday of each week regarding the anticipated blasting schedule for the following week. Pre-blast surveys are ongoing; no blasting will occur within 500 feet of any residence prior to the completion of a pre-blast survey for that residence.

  • Indiana: Lane restrictions on SR 62 northbound December 16 to 18:

There will be lane restrictions on SR 62 northbound in Indiana in the vicinity of the SR 265 and SR 62 interchange December 16 through 18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The lane restrictions will be in place for about a half-mile in each direction of the interchange. Residents are asked to use caution and drive slowly when driving in the area during this time.

  • Indiana: Upper River Road closed beginning December 18:

Upper River Road northbound and southbound in Indiana will be closed just north of Utica beginning December 18 for East End Crossing construction activities. This arrangement likely will continue for the duration of the construction project. Flaggers will be present to temporarily stop and guide traffic through this area. Residents are asked to use caution and drive slowly when driving in the area during this time.

  • Indiana: Blasting schedule for week of December 16:

Blasting to prepare for the East End Crossing is scheduled to occur in Indiana near Upper River Road and Salem Road just east of Utica. There will not be any traffic stops for this blast.

The date and approximate time (within 15 minutes) will be:

Monday, December 16: 3 p.m.

Blasting is also scheduled to occur in Indiana on Utica-Sellersburg Road near the Brookhollow subdivision. Prior to each blast in this location, traffic must be stopped for 5 to 20 minutes for the safety of the workers and the traveling public. Traffic stops during the blasts will occur on Utica-Sellersburg Road between Shadowbrook Lane and Surrey Road.

The dates and approximate times (within 15 minutes) will be:

Tuesday, December 17: 3 p.m.
Wednesday, December 18: 3 p.m.
Thursday, December 19: 3 p.m.
Friday, December 20: 3 p.m.
