LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Fifteen years ago, $6 of every $10 spent by state government went to education. Now, the expenditure is getting closer to $5 of every $10.

Still significant, but certainly, not adequate, as something as basic as school textbooks are not available for some students.

Next month, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear will deliver a budget proposal for the next few years that we hope highlights education as priority one. The revenue pie is smaller so tough choices will need to be made to make that happen.

Getting an F grade for funding won't cut it anymore. Education funding is essentially an investment, whether it is K-12 or post secondary. And we should expect a return on the investment and hold school systems and higher education accountable, but it is an investment that must be made.

Ultimately, new revenue streams will need to be developed to meet the demands of both the education and health needs of the Commonwealth.

But hopefully, the students of today will be bright enough to be the strong leaders of tomorrow to offer quality solutions to make that happen. Increased education funding will help build a better workforce to fuel a growing economy that will jump start one of those revenue streams.
