LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Stacks of boxed turkey dinners went out the door to some civilian, but mostly military families during Saturday's 9th Annual Service for Peace Christmas Angel meal distribution.

Service for Peace and UAW/Ford Local 862 volunteers distributed the Christmas meal baskets along with Jeffersonville High School JROTC cadets.

More than 250 families received a box containing a frozen turkey, side items and ingredients to prepare a holiday meal.

"In many cases, this means everything to them. Too many of our service members and veterans are underemployed or unemployed. This meal basket may make all the difference for those going through a difficult time," Michael Morgan said, Service for Peace Programs Director.

Volunteers also provided parents school supplies for the upcoming Spring semester.

"It probably won't mean much to the kids around Christmas but it'll mean a lot to the parents come the beginning of the school year. It's another financial burden we're trying to alleviate," Morgan said.

UAW/Ford Local 862 assembled all of the meal packages and spent weeks planning distribution.

"The biggest satisfaction is just having all of our members doing what we do all year long, but doing it at a time of the year that folks need it most," Local 862 President Todd Dunn said.
