Comfort Dental staff offers free dental care on Christmas Eve

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - It's not your typical Christmas wish: a trip to the dentist office. However, for dozens of local families, this Christmas Eve, it proved to be a priceless gift.

Inside the Comfort Dental on Dixie Highway, Steven Cummings, 26, anxiously awaited an opportunity to meet one-on-one with a dentist Tuesday morning.

"It's the most unbearable pain I've ever dealt with in my life," said Cummings. "I can sleep maybe about two hours at night and then I wake up; sometimes in tears."

Cummings said his pain is the result of an abscessed tooth. The 26-year-old said the pain now circulates through his body.

"The doctor told me the infection spread into my liver," began Cummings, "so they said I need to get it pulled ASAP or it could kill me."

Cummings, and dozens of other people in need of dental care, arrived bright and early at Comfort Dental to take advantage of free services offered on Christmas Eve from 7:30 a.m. To 11:30 a.m.

"This is Care Day," began Comfort Dental dentist Mikal Lindman, "our 30th year of doing Care Day. This is kind of our day that every year we like to give back to the community."

According to Dr. Lindman, more than 100 patients took advantage of the free dental cleanings, fillings and extractions last year at the Dixie Highway office. This year, he expected even more.

"We know that there's a lot of unmet dental needs in the community," said. Dr. Lindman. "We like to give a little bit back."

For Cummings, the free dental visit proved to be more than just a charitable donation, but rather shot at having not only a Merry Christmas but a merrier way of life.

"If they can pull this abscessed tooth out it could possibly, actually save my life," said Cummings.

Nationally, more than 6,000 patients took part in Comfort Dental's Care Day in 2012.

Since Care Day began in 1984, Comfort Dental has given away about $17 million in dental services. To learn more about Comfort Dental, click here.
