UPS: Thousands of packages won't be delivered by Christmas, unexpected demand cited

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Workers at UPS' Louisville hub will spend Christmas night sorting packages after an unexpectedly large number of shipments overwhelmed the company, causing thousands of gifts to go undelivered by the holiday.

"The volume of air packages in our system exceeded the capacity of our network as demand was much greater than forecast," said UPS spokesman Jeff Wafford. "As a result, a small percentage of shipments were delayed and not delivered today [Christmas Eve]. We expect the majority of these packages will be delivered the day after Christmas."

UPS delivers packages on Christmas Eve but not Christmas Day.

Some customers took to Twitter to voice their displeasure.

"Once again, @UPS delays packages without cause," @stephensurman tweeted, "@amazon Are you going to hold them accountable? #GoFedex"

@asante0523 tweeted, "Went to UPS and found out most of everyones packages got delayed tell Thursday. People were literally screaming and fighting. #christmasjoy"

Wafford said UPS had additional sorting operations at Worldport on Tuesday and would have more on Christmas night to serve customers nationwide affected by the delay.
