NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) – The village of Birkville is known to few people. The population: 1,972 and in the past 12 years, it has only grown.

"This year we made a zoo," said Susan Birk.

James and Susan Birk have been married for 41 years. For them, the city of Birkville is personal.

"And then I found this water tower and you'll notice the population is 1972, that's the year we were married," James explained.

According to the Birks, a cabin in the city is just like the place where James proposed.

"I didn't know if I was crazy or not, but I decided to give her the ring and let's get hitched!"

The village is 24-feet-long and comes in parts. They start mapping things out months in advance.

"The first thing you do is spend a couple of days unpacking everything," Susan said when asked to explain the city's plan.

The wooden stands are so heavy that James is sure the Rockets could dance on them. "It takes me 24 hours to plug everything in and get everything up."

Arthritis has settled in Susan's fingers and back. James turns 64 in February.

"A whole lot of people her age and my age is not going to be able to put this up and I'll do it till I drop."

Like any modern urban village, expansion is in the works.

"Next year we're going to have a campground."

The Birks have opened their home to their neighbors, some who didn't always know that the village of Birkville was just down the street.
