LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Is your garbage over-flowing with wrapping paper and boxes that contained a new mobile device or flat screen TV?

Before you toss out those boxes, police are urging you not to advertise what's new inside your home.

"What we suggest is maybe taking those boxes, cut them up, turn them on the inside where as just the cardboard is showing put them inside the garbage can and it would be a lot less visible for individuals to see," said Louisville Metro Police Department spokesperson Dwight Mitchell.

Because now more than ever crooks are looking for vulnerable houses. "These are crimes of opportunity," said Mitchell.

Police said burglaries pick up around the holidays because more people are thought to be out of town. The LMPD 8th division alerted residents that last week there were seven home break-ins.

"There are some easy simple safe things you can do like putting your lights on timers, maybe stopping your mail and making sure the newspaper is stopped if you receive one," said Mitchell.

Hall said in his Middletown neighborhood, everybody watches out for one another. "We all know what each other drives and when someone is going to be home or not going to be home," said Hall.

Police said don't forget about your digital life. "Obviously don't advertise it on social media that you are going out of town," said Mitchell. "I know that's a medium in which people communicate, but you never know who is looking."

The same goes for showing off those brand new presents. "We kind of keep it family originated on the social media stuff," said Hall. "We talk about how are kids were happy this Christmas, we show the stack of wrapped gifts and not what was in them."
