LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A firefighter was injured while battling a suspicious building fire in the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville.

Multiple fire crews responded to the scene in the 3800 block of River Park Drive at 12:24 p.m. Friday.

Firefighters said the blaze extended from the second floor to the third floor of the building and through the roof.

Captain Sal Melendez said the while crews were inside a second floor room partially collapsed, forcing crews to evacuate the structure to fight the fire from the outside. While trying to get out of the building Firefighter Josiah M. Bailey, 27, fell through a second story window onto a portion of the roof.

Bailey was taken to University of Louisville Hospital with a minor head injury and a fractured wrist.

Capt. Melendez said it took 25 firefighters 43 minutes to get the fire under control.

The building, which was originally all residential until the first floor was converted into a liquor store, was vacant and boarded up at the time of the fire. Capt. Melendez said in addition to building being damaged there was also damage caused by the fire on an adjacent home.

According to a witness, several juveniles were seen leaving the property before the building went up in flames. Captain Melendez said arson investigators found several fires were burning on the second floor and consider the cause to be suspicious.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the fire. Anyone with any information to call the Metro Arson Bureau at (502) 574-3721.
