LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Louisville Metro Animal Services is investigating what they described as one of the worst animal abuse cases they have ever seen as another organization offers a reward for answers.
Monday morning a repair worker found a mutilated dog behind the Valero gas station, located at the intersection of Valley College Road and Stonestreet Road, in Valley Station. Whoever was responsible had removed multiple body parts and the dog was dead when officers arrived.
"This is, by far, one of the worst cases we've ever had to deal with," said Margaret Brosko, a senior manager with Louisville Metro Animal Services. "The extent of the injuries and the type of injuries this animal sustained was absolutely gruesome."
The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest, Brosko said.
Brosko described the German shepherd mix as brown and black and had a distinctive black spot on its left front leg above the foot.
Animal officers are not sure whether more than one person is responsible for the dog's death, Brosko said. Whoever was responsible likely dumped the dog between 5 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday.
Larry Miller, the gas station employee who called 311, said the repair worker found the dog lying near the dumpster at the back of the lot.
"It's something you don't want to see," Miller said. "The animal couldn't fight, it didn't have a chance. And I think the person who did this should be punished for it."
The gas station's manager said he had bought a security camera for the back of his building but had not installed it yet.
Animal officers remained in the gas station parking lot for part of the afternoon to investigate, Miller said.
