Experts say more than 85 percent of parents are misusing their child safety seats in their cars. That's why new car seat rules are going into effect in the new year.
Child seat expert Katelynne Edge at Lefler's Auto in Evansville installs dozens of car seats each week. She explains that there are two methods to install- either using lower latch hooks or using the safety belt. But those latch hooks are only intended to be used for children under 65 pounds.
Starting January 1, manufacturers will have to clearly label the weight of the car seat because officials say the total weight of the seat and child must be under 65 pounds to use the latch method.
Lefler's installs and checks car seats for free and they say they see the same mistakes over and over.
"However they've attached it to the vehicle is either too loose or too tight. You can have it too tight believe it or not. You want that seat to be able to move side to side about an inch or so, no more movement than that. The idea is that if you're in a side impact crash that the seat can shift sideways a little bit to absorb some of that crash force so the child doesn't," Edge said.
Experts say you should only use either the lower anchors or the seat belt harness, not both. If you're not sure if yours in correctly installed, you can make appointment at Lefler's to have it secured for free.
