Remember to register your pet in 2014, late fees waived by LMAS

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – If you have not registered your pet, you have a couple of months to do so without paying a late fee.

It's the law in Jefferson County to have your pet licensed. Louisville Metro Animal Services will waive all late fees for anyone who needs to license a pet until February 28. Late fees can range from $47.50 for altered animals to $195.00 for unaltered animals.

"Licensing your pet is extremely important and it's the law," said Louisville Metro Animal Services Senior Manager Margaret Brosko. "If you ever lose your pet, licensing can help you reunite. License numbers provide our staff with your contact information. If a Metro Animal Control Officer finds a roaming dog or cat with a license, the officer will give your pet a ride home."

LMAS uses funding from licenses to support operations including caring for stray pets, investigating public safety threats as it relates to animals, and investigating allegations of animal cruelty/neglect.

The cost to license a spayed or neutered pet is $9. All others are $50. You need a copy of your pet's current rabies certificate to obtain a license.
