LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Three people are facing charges after police said they stole vehicles and took them to a scrap yard for profit.

According to Louisville Metro Police, Heather Tanksley, Morgan Whelen, and David McGill were taken into custody after vehicles owned by Tanksley’s former neighbor were targeted by the trio.

Police said a tow company was called to remove vehicles from the victim’s property. On two separate occasions, when the truck arrived Tanksley rode with the tow driver to the junk yard and submitted her ID to have two cars turned into scrap.

Shively Police Sergeant Josh Myers said,  "The tow truck company was under the impression that the persons that were calling were the owners of the vehicle."

Officers said a call from a neighbor cracked the case on a third theft attempt from the same property.

Nick Schade, of Tony's Wrecker Service in Louisville, is the former president of the Towing and Recovery Association of Kentucky.  He said towing under false pretenses is becoming a growing problem across the state, primarily with broken down cars on the interstate.  "Usually the cars are abandoned and before law enforcement can get there to impound them, they are sometimes stolen,” he said.

Officer Myers said almost anyone can be a victim of such a crime, "There's is no blanket protection."

The wrecker service that participated in hauling these cars away was out of Bullitt County and is not facing any criminal charges.  The Shively Police Department is working with other police agencies across Kentuckiana to see if any other thefts were related to this case.

Tanksley, Whelen, and McGill were all charged with theft by unlawful taking.
