Many people who have been in CBS 5's Pay It Forward program over the years never expected anything in return.

But a Valley woman now finds herself on the receiving end of a pay it forward surprise.

Beth George's smiling face is the first you see when stopping by Freedom Academy in Scottsdale.

Working the front desk at a middle school takes a multi-tasker extraordinaire, from coordinating pizza delivery to making sure the kids are where they should be, and their many needs are met.

"Beth is incredibly generous, funny, very positive. She's the perfect person when you walk into the school to make you feel welcome,  to make your kids feel welcome," Beth George's friend Susan Green said.

If you didn't know her well, you would have no idea that this has been the most devastating  year in Beth George's life.

Her husband, Brad George, her companion for 30 years, was a man who took pride in his health and was never really sick, until being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in 2012. Months later, the disease took his life.

"He was just a great hands-on husband and dad. He just was, he was a special guy. He was a special man," Beth George said.

She is now raising three children on a modest income while still paying her husband's medical bills.

Four years ago, when a co-worker was in need, Beth George surprised him with $500 from CBS 5's Pay It Forward program.

"I get to give you all these brand new bills to pay it forward to you and your family, to let you know that we are not just standing beside you last year. We're standing beside you in the long haul," Green said.

"He wouldn't want us to be sad. Before he passed, he told us, 'I want you to go on, I want you guys to continue with your lives. I don't want you to just sit there and cry,' because that's not the type of man he was - he was a very positive and happy man," Beth George said.
