NEW RIVER, AZ (CBS5) -

Officials from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office released 911 calls Thursday from the night something blew up outside a New River home. Investigators said the victim, Steven Lane, lost part of his leg.

Dispatcher: "You said something being gone."

Caller: "Toes."

Dispatcher: "His toes are gone?"

Caller: "Yeah."

According to deputies, Lane was helping a couple friends move out of a home in November on the New River ranch when the explosion happened. Investigators said no one was supposed to be living on the property.

Dispatcher: "What happened? A fridge fell on him?"

Caller: "No. No. He. I'm pretty sure he stepped on an explosive."

Dispatcher: "What was explosive?"

Caller: "There was a loud, loud, loud bang. I've been to Iraq and everything. It sounded like a bomb."

Doctors removed shrapnel from Lane's entire body and amputated his foot.

Caller: "We made a tourniquet for his leg. He's bleeding out of his wrist and his mouth."

Dispatcher: "OK. Is he still awake and breathing?"

Caller: "Barely."

Dispatcher: "Is he breathing normally?"

Caller: "No. No."

Dispatcher: "You need to start CPR then, OK?"

It turned out the property had quite a bit of history with explosives. Chuck Byers used to own the ranch.

In the late 90s officials conducted a massive cleanup after investigators discovered 8,000 pounds of explosive chemicals and hundreds of munitions on the property.

After the explosion in November another search was conducted. Investigators found and destroyed three grenades that appeared to be very weathered.

MCSO detectives are still waiting on test results to determine if the explosive Lane stepped on was one that had been left on the property.
