Louisville native behind one of Hollywood's top movies

LOUIVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville native is making a big name for himself with his latest movie. Joey McFarland grew up in Louisville but has been working in New York and Los Angeles for the last few years. Together with his producing partner, they've already found success, but they are poised to see much more.

With its big stars and provocative topics, it's not surprising that The Wolf of Wall Street is drawing in audiences.

"We just knew that this was a definitely, definitely a movie that was going to get people's attentions," McFarland said.

Without McFarland and his Red Granite Pictures, it may not have ever been made.

"Wolf of Wall Street is a film that I've worked on for three and a half years and I've given my heart and soul to," he said.

McFarland and his producing partner at Red Granite are making a career out of making movies studios are hesitant to touch.

"We go after films that we love that are not just commercial or not just in the budgetary fit," he said.

It's a long way from his roots at DeSales High School and the University of Louisville.

"My parents were very supportive of my passion for film. My mother would -- I was raised on the classic films -- my father was a more of the take-me-to-the cinema kind of guy," McFarland said. "I didn't really know how to pursue films in Louisville so I was more of an independent entrepreneurial spirit."

His career has taken him from Louisville to Cincinnati, then New York and L.A. "I haven't been home in a couple of years," he said. "I wish I could get back more."

But in a few seconds talking to McFarland and you realize he hasn't left his hometown behind.

"I love Louisville. It's the greatest," he said. "I'm constantly reminding people in my industry of all the talent that comes out of Kentucky - people like Johnny Depp and Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Shannon - and I say one day hopefully I'll be on that list that people refer to."

The Wolf of Wall Street is certainly pushing McFarland to the top. He's been nominated for a Producers Guild Award and Variety put him on their list of the top 10 producers to watch.

Red Granite Pictures has some big movies in the works including Dumb and Dumber To with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, which McFarland hopes to release in summer or fall of next year.
