AHWATUKEE, AZ (CBS5) -

Ahwatukee, with its proximity to South Mountain, is no stranger to wildlife.

"We've heard the coyotes at night," said resident Tina Charon. "You'll see the occasional stray on the street once in the while."

Javalina sightings are common too.

Arizona's Game and Fish Department said that while bobcats do roam South Mountain, as part of their habitat, they don't get many reports of these animals wandering into Ahwatukee neighborhoods.

"Looking out the kitchen window, I could see the back of a cat and it was huge!" said Charon. "And, I thought, what neighbor has a cat this big?"

Turns out, this was no ordinary house cat.

Charon said she realized there was a bobcat in her backyard, near Mountain Sky and Ranch Circle, around 8:30 a.m. on Monday.

"It was beautiful, beautiful - but shocking," she said. "You feel like you're suddenly inside the zoo now."

From inside her house, Charon snapped several pictures of the bobcat strolling around her yard with a rabbit in its mouth.

"He was so comfortable," she said.

Charon said the bobcat didn't stay long.

It eventually jumped over a wall, where it snacked on its prey on her neighbor's lawn.

"I don't want them in my yard," Charon said. "But, they do have a right to pass through and do what they have to do. So, as long as they're not doing any damage - they do belong."

Arizona Game and Fish advises people not to leave pet foot outside, as that can attract hungry, wild animals.

They said if a bobcat does make its way into your yard, make a lot of noise to scare it off or squirt it with a hose.

If it becomes a regular occurrence, call Game and Fish.
