Fort Knox soldier killed while serving in Afghanistan

FORT KNOX, KY (WAVE) – A Fort Knox soldier died Saturday from injuries sustained during an enemy attack on his unit.

Sgt. First Class William K. Lacey, 38, of Laurel, Fla., was a wheeled vehicle mechanic assigned to Company F, 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

Lacey began his military service in January 2003 and arrived to Fort Knox in January 2013. This was his fifth deployment after serving three tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan.

His unit was attacked with a rocket that propelled grenades in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. Lacey has been awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

Fort Knox and 3/1 will hold Duke Remembrance ceremonies here and in Afghanistan in Lacey's honor.
