LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Most successful football coaches excel in part because of great quarterbacks.

The University of Louisville thrived on the gridiron the past two years – going 23-3 with two huge bowl wins – thanks to coach Charlie Strong and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater leading the way.

Both left the Cardinals this past week for new challenges. Strong will coach the Texas Longhorns and  Bridgewater is projected by some to be the top pick in the NFL draft.

Strong accomplished what we all strive to do - make the place where we work a better place because of our imprint. He developed young men by leading with integrity. He was ethical. He attracted quality coaches and players and held them accountable for doing the right things. He won on the field and off it. Louisville has won just six bowl games in the program's 100 year history, and Strong and his players won three of them. Twenty of his players will graduate this year, and 15 already have, including Teddy Bridgewater. For him, like all successful coaches, it was always about the players.

Bridgewater, like Strong, is a class act. He was focused, tough, and disciplined, with off the charts talent. He is a great representative of the University.

Louisville's program is more than ready for the challenge of heading into the Atlantic Coast Conference next year and taking on the likes of Florida State, the new national champion, because of the leadership both of these men demonstrated while leading the Cardinals.

We tip our hats to them and all of the players who were about a minute shy of a perfect season this year.
