(RNN) - Whether you are a woman who wants to propose to a longtime boyfriend or a man who wants to make Valentine's Day extra memorable by popping the question, Cupid always seems to aim his arrow at holiday engagements.

Men, it's not too late to prepare for a Valentine's Day proposal, especially if you have noticed how much your girlfriend has been talking about her best friend's new diamond rock that she received on New Year's.

There is still time to visit your local jeweler if your heart desires to make that final step towards commitment, but pay attention to what makes your significant other swoon.

Once you have the ring you feel will best suit your girlfriend or boyfriend, you'll need some romantic ideas bold enough to knock socks and hair clips off.

And nothing says "I want to shower you with the best gifts," like personalized "I love you" notes left throughout the house, nearby park or favorite hideaway. Spray the notes with your love's favorite cologne or perfume. You want your scent to linger under their nose, as you lead them on a treasure hunt.

Once they reach you, not knowing what to expect, get on one knee and then hand them a box with nothing in it; you must wait for their puzzled expression.

After the joke settles in, tell your honey to walk to an area where you hid another gift, and when they open it, they find perhaps earrings, a necklace or a watch to go along with the surprise. Just when your partner is about to give up on any chance of a proposal, pull out the real treasure and say those four magical words, "Will you marry me?"

If your girlfriend or boyfriend loves animals, surprise them with a cute puppy or kitten and attach a note to its collar that asks if there's enough room for you in their life forever along with their new pet that you named Marry Me.

You can make a bracelet filled with charms that remind you of the special moments you've shared. One of the charms could be a locket that opens to say, "Marry Me."

Another sweet proposal could begin with roses, a lot of roses, everywhere, in the bathtub, on the bed, in your sweetie's slippers, in the car. You can make the moment special with rose-colored silk lingerie and rose-scented massage oil, according to theknot.com.

Once you've decided how you want to propose, you may want to find a secluded location. Use that passport you've been keeping tucked away, or finally take that week vacation you've needed to take, by planning a trip to Paris, Egypt or the Virgin Islands.

Then surprise your loved one on the trip of their life. Why not take your relationship higher by booking a flight? Literally, the sky is the limit with 2014 Valentine's Day engagement ideas.
