LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Fans chanted "Bobby" as the University of Louisville's new head football coach made a brief appearance at a rally Thursday.

It seemed some fans are welcoming him back. Bobby Petrino appeared at a standing-room only event on the third floor at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

Some seem to have found forgiveness for the coach who suddenly left eight years ago. "I hated when he left, but it's an opportunity for him to come back and settle in and be a long-term coach," lifelong fan David Boggs said.

Die-hards like Boggs packed the Brown and Williamson Club for a chance to get a glimpse or an autograph from Louisville's new football coach.

"It is great to be back home!" Petrino shouted wearing a Cardinal lapel pin. It's a team he left winning 82-percent of the games - a record he vows to build upon.

"I'm so impressed with Coach Strong and what his staff have done. They built the program. What we're doing is just coming in and just trying to build on what's already established," Petrino said.

The coach scored a second chance with fans while signing autographs and shaking hands.

"There's going to be a lot of talk until he wins his first ACC game. At that point, all the conversation is going to be forgotten and it's just going to matter once we start winning. They'll know then we made the right choice," UofL fan Cat Gallagher said.

This is Petrino's 16th coaching job in his nearly 31-year career including 10 college and two NFL teams.
