LMPD: Men fired shots near homicide detective

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Three men are facing charges after shots were fired from a business in the vicinity of a Louisville Metro Police detective.

According to arrest reports, officers were dispatched around 4:45 p.m. January 9 after gunfire was reported coming from a business in the 6900 block of Preston Highway.

When officers arrived, they found the men – Thomas L. Buchanan, 26, Jesse Lewis Clark, 35, and Payton C. Nichols, 29, – in an area outside the business were the shots came from. Police also found rifle and pistol shells inside and outside the business.

Buchanan told police he had fired a pistol and a .22 caliber rifle into the ditch across from the business. What the men didn't know was a LMPD homicide detective was across from the ditch line conducting an investigation.

Police said Buchanan tried to hide the weapons inside the business when police arrived, but Clark later told officers the weapons were hidden inside the ceiling panels.

All three men were charged with wanton endangerment and disorderly conduct. Buchanan and Clark face an additional charge of tampering with physical evidence.

In addition to the charges from the men are facing for firing the weapons, Buchanan was also charged with possession of marijuana, Clark was charged for possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Officers also arrested a fourth man on drug charges. According to police, Derick T. Stout, 35, smelled of marijuana and admitted to having some on him. A small bag of marijuana was found in his jacket pocket.
