SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
As Arizona's child welfare system is in disarray, the need for stable foster homes is as great as ever. CBS 5 News got an inside look at what it means to foster a child, and make a better Arizona.
"We always wanted one more child and this is the way that we see is the right way to go about that," said a mother CBS 5 News calls Kelly (not her real name) in order to protect her identity. She found out she'd be taking in a newborn with virtually no time to prepare.
"It was on Christmas day, we were home, and we said, 'Yes!'" Kelly said.
She turned to one of the few organizations available for help, Arizona Helping Hands.
"She didn't even have a onesie for the child," said Dan Shufelt, a volunteer with Arizona Helping Hands. They have an 8,000-square-foot warehouse stocked with anything a foster family would need, all thanks to donations.
Shufelt said foster families face a number of challenges, so they try to make the process a little less stressful.
"The people who are involved in foster care are not in it for the money," Shufelt said. "They're in it because of their heart."
"I've struggled with what my position is in all this," Kelly said. "I'm her caregiver, I'm not her legal guardian, I'm not her biological mother."
While Kelly is doing a great job navigating those challenges, she realizes the time may come when the baby can be reunited with her family.
"We want her to be safe and happy, and whatever that is, then that's what we want," Kelly said.
