LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A teenager who allegedly wrecked into a police cruiser after leading officers on a pursuit from the Russell neighborhood to Shively was taken into custody.
According to Louisville Metro police, shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday officers responded to a report of shots fired near 22nd Street and West Muhammad Ali Boulevard. When officers arrived at the scene they located a vehicle matching the description and attempted to pull the driver over but the driver fled leading police on a chase.
The chase headed east on Interstate 264 (the Georgia Powers Expressway) until the driver exited at Cane Run Road. Police said the suspect finally stopped before making a U-turn and hitting a LMPD cruiser.
Members of the Louisville Metro Police VIPER unit joined in the vehicle chase that came to an end in the 2100 block of Garrs Lane when the suspect wrecked the vehicle he was driving into a pole. After wrecking the suspect then jumped out of the car and fled on foot, leading officers on a short foot chase.
Police arrested a 17-year-old who was driving the vehicle and charged him with assault, criminal mischief, fleeing and evading police. Officers said addition charges may be pending.
Officers said the suspect was the only person inside the vehicle.
The police cruiser that was hit did have damage but the officer involved in the crash was not injured.
