TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A suspected car thief died Tuesday afternoon after authorities said he was shot by a Pinal County Sheriff's deputy.

Eloy Police officers attempted to stop the suspect around 12:45 p.m. in a Toyota Corolla that was reported stolen in Casa Grande Monday night.

Authorities said the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Manuel Orosco Longoria, was armed and stated he "wouldn't be taken alive," according to a news release.

Longoria reportedly led Eloy Police and Pinal County Sheriff's officials on a 40-minute car chase that ended when he crashed into patrol vehicle while trying to get away, the release said. He exited the car and police said he yelled profanities and did not obey verbal commands, including a police order to the ground.

"Officers and deputies attempted to use less lethal means to take him into custody, including firing several beanbag rounds and taser deployments," Sheriff Paul Babeu stated in the release. "The suspect refused to obey commands and suddenly reached back into the vehicle. A deputy felt the suspect was reaching for the gun he reportedly had, so then he fired two rounds from his department-issued patrol rifle."

Longoria was hit twice, treated at the scene and taken to Casa Grande Hospital where he later died, officials said.

The Eloy Police Department will continue to lead the stolen vehicle investigation while the Pinal County Sheriff's Office looks into the deputy-involved shooting.

Authorities said the deputy involved is a five and a half-year veteran.
