LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Detectives observed a drug deal then discovered a 19-month-old child in the suspects' car.

Police were conducting a narcotics investigation near 34th Street and Larkwood Avenue in the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville on Tuesday evening.

According to an arrest report, the detectives saw Aaron Byerly, 25, get out of a car and meet another person on a sidewalk where he completed a "hand to hand narcotics transaction."

Police said those officers stopped the car for a traffic violation at 26th Street and Broadway. The driver, John Napier, 43, admitted to detectives he had a "bindle of heroin" in his pocket.

Officers said Byerly's 19-month-old son was in the back seat of the car. The child was not in a car seat or wearing a seat belt, police said.

Detectives located a spoon and needle in the car's seat pocket directly in front of where the boy was sitting.

Both Byerly and Napier were arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
