PD: Jailed suspect tries to arrange murder of mom, child

Bernadette Beanes Bernadette Beanes

A Valley woman is accused of plotting to kill four people, including a 9-year-old boy, while she was in a Phoenix jail.

Police said Bernadette Beanes, 20, was trying to cover her tracks from a kidnapping and abduction that ended with a dramatic police standoff in May 2013.

Israel Celis was wanted for abducting his 3-year-old son and killed himself after a 12-hour barricade in West Phoenix, in which eight other people were held hostage.

Beanes was arrested in the case, accused of helping Celis kidnap his wife and son, prior to the barricade situation.

Phoenix police said Beanes was plotting to murder witnesses in that case to cover-up her involvement.

CBS5 spoke to a one of the men who was allegedly held hostage by Celis and Beanes. He asked that we not show his face and not reveal his name.

"I don't know how to feel about it was pretty intense. I never thought I'd go through something like that," he said.

The police standoff ended when officers in an armored vehicle drove through the front of the home and Celis took his own life.

Beans was arrested the next day when police unraveled her alleged involvement.

"She seemed like a confused nineteen year old girl who got misled by the wrong bad boy type," said our source.

CBS5 also spoke with the mother of the now 9 year old boy who was kidnapped that day. She also requested anonymity.

She said police called her Christmas Eve to warn her that Beanes might be trying to hire someone to kill her.

Beans was also targeting our source's live-in girlfriend.

"I don't think she really knew what was going on when it happened," said our source.

"Obviously we were not going to get to a point to where people were going to be in harm's way. We're preventing that as we normally would in these types of investigations, but she was making every effort to have this done," Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said.

Beanes allegedly tried to set up four hits from jail, arranging to pay undercover detectives $20,000. One of the targets was a 9-year-old boy.

"Although we've had some instances of murder for hire, but how far she's willing to go from the standpoint of targeting a particular individual, a little child who is 9 years old, is surprising to us," Martos said.

Martos wouldn't say how Beanes was going to get a hold of that money.

"Individuals who are wanting to get away with facing charges and are willing to find people to harm others, so she can get away with other charges. I'm sure there was a way she could get a hold of that money, " Martos said.
