$225 million renovation planned for Sun Devil Stadium

Get ready for a whole new experience at Sun Devil Stadium. Construction crews have already started tearing out bleachers as part of a $225 million renovation project.

Arizona State University Associate Athletic Director Rocky Harris said the 56-year-old facility is severely outdated and in major need of a makeover.

"In the upper deck on the northeast side, they don't even have restrooms," said Harris. "That's basic. If you can't deliver restrooms to fans, you're not doing a service to your fan base and those that support you best."

The plan now is to eliminate about 11,000 seats to create more space and comfort for fans. The old bleachers will be replaced by wider, more comfortable seating.

Fans tired of walking up all the ramps to get their seats on the upper level will be happy to hear that new escalators will make life a lot easier.

There will be also be a new premium seating level - with fancy new suites and a club area where fans can hang out during a game. It will be air conditioned.

The restrooms will get some much needed improvements, as well.

Fans have complained for years about the limited restrooms in the stadium. ASU officials said that dozens of new restrooms will be put in as part of the renovation project.

One of the most unique parts of the renovation will be a series video screens outside the stadium, where fans can camp out year-round and watch images and videos.

The major construction will begin in spring 2015 and the project is expected to be finished in 2017.

School officials said that the ASU football team will continue to play at the stadium during the renovations.

All of the money for the project comes from private donations. ASU is still hoping to raise $50 million for the project.
