LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A man who once worked as a cashier and bagger at Kroger is charged with using a discount code to defraud the grocery chain.

According to an arrest warrant, Derrien L. Eddins, 18, committed the crimes between October 24 and December 17, 2013.

The warrant sates Eddins would manually enter the fraudulent discount code on merchandise that he or a co-defendant would bring to the register. The code would significantly reduce the purchase price.

Kroger officials say an internal audit uncovered the discrepancies and a review of video surveillance was used to identify those involved.

Eddins was arrested by St. Matthews police on January 15. He is charged with theft by unlawful taking over $500. Kroger said the total loss to the store was $524.

Eddins is the second person charged with committing this type of fraud against Kroger. Aaron Cross, 18, who is being held in the murder of a fellow Kroger employee at the Hubbards Lane store, is also charged with fraudulent discount code during the same time period.

Kroger said a third employee has given a written statement admitting involvement in the scheme.
