LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - If you're still perplexed why there wasn't a school delay Friday, you're not alone.

Slick roads made the morning and evening commute a challenge for drivers across the Metro, including Jefferson County Public School buses. JCPS personnel claim there were adverse conditions, but it wasn't dangerous.

"We definitely dealt with adversity on the roads, but it wasn't dangerous. When our transportation crews surveyed the roads and monitored the forecast, they determined it was safe to operate our bus fleet," JCPS Communication Director Ben Jackey said.

Since snow didn't begin falling until after 5 a.m., it was too late issue a delay or cancellation.

"The problem with this type of weather, it came in at 5:30 in the morning," Teamsters Local 783 President John Stovall said. Local 783 represents more than 1,000 JCPS bus drivers.

When asked whether JCPS made the right decision, Stovall said, "Probably - if the district was to call off school at that time, you've got parents who don't have way to get a baby sitter, they've got go to work and then you have drivers who've already left. We have students picked up at 5:30 a.m."

One school bus hit a pole on the way to school Friday morning on Lower Hunter's Trace and Mount Everest, near Dixie Highway.

Children were on the bus at the time, but no one was injured.

"We don't think the 2-hour delay would've made that much of a difference. Based on the way traffic was going even at 8 or 9 o'clock, the roads were still packed with snow. Safety is our priority and we transported every student safely," Jackey said.
