Mormon church allows public in new Gilbert temple

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is allowing the public to get a look at its new temple in Gilbert this weekend.  Large crowds are expected.

The temple is located near Pecos and Greenfield at 3301 South Greenfield Road.

The tours will be available during an open house period that begins Saturday and runs through Feb. 15, excluding Sundays. Reservations are required.

The construction began on the 85,000-square-foot temple in November 2010, and it is now the tallest building in Gilbert.

The church invited interfaith leaders to tour the temple, which is one of four in Arizona.

The other Arizona temples are located in Mesa, Snowflake and Thatcher.   Another is under construction in Phoenix and one is planned for Tucson.

The Gilbert temple will be dedicated March 2.  Once the dedication ceremony is complete, it becomes the 142nd operating temple of the church worldwide.
