Carjacking suspect caught after chase in Chandler

A 19-year-old man is in jail after a carjacking and police chase through Chandler Sunday night.

Daniel Hernandez, of Chandler, is suspected of walking up to a man sitting in his car at a Laundromat at 403 S. Arizona Ave. about 7:35 p.m. and pointing a sharp object at him, ordering him to get out of the car, according to a Chandler police spokesman.

The victim surrendered his vehicle to the suspect, who drove off.

Police officers saw the car running without its lights a few minutes later and tried to stop it but the suspect fled, the spokesman said.

The pursuit took officers through Chandler, south through Sun Lakes and east on Riggs Road, where the suspect ran over stop sticks at Riggs and Crossbow roads. The car traveled a short distance before officers took Hernandez into custody, the spokesman said.

Hernandez was on supervised probation, the spokesman said.
