Apple recognizes Flagstaff reading program

Flagstaff's public school district has been recognized by Apple for a reading program that uses technology to engage students.

Apple representatives visited Flagstaff last week to highlight the iREAD program during a school board meeting. They presented officials with a Distinguished Program Award.

Superintendent Barbara Hickman tells the Arizona Daily Sun the district is honored to bring positive attention to the Flagstaff area.

The program helps develop reading skills by putting iPads in the hands of all students, from kindergarten through third grade.

Teachers have been using the devices in their classrooms by taking advantage of literacy skill-building applications. Students have been using the devices to create multimedia products that demonstrate the skills they have learned.

District officials say iREAD was started in response to discouraging districtwide achievement data.
