LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Police are investigating after a 16-year-old was shot in the chest in downtown Louisville.

The shooting happened in the 600 block of Ormsby Avenue near Jackson Street just after 5 p.m. Monday.

Police said the victim was alert and talking with detectives and police hope that will lead to the person or people responsible.

"The cops they were hollering stay in your house, stay in house," said a mother of two who did not want to be identified.

Witnesses said they heard as many as six shots fired. Police believe a group made up of three to six teens took off after the shooting.

"I just looked out our window and they just jetted through our yard jumping fences, two of them," said the mother.

Police said left behind was a 16-year-old who was shot in the chest.

"We did recover one weapon," said LMPD Sgt. Robert Biven. "We do believe that was the weapon that was utilized, but we will test that and make sure that's the case."

Two other boys were also taken in by police.

"We know that there are multiple witnesses, we don't know how many played a part in the shooting, but we are being told there was at least a group of what appeared to be juveniles at the location where the shots were fired, so we certainly want to locate them and see what role they played," said Biven.

June Alexander, who lives nearby, said she's upset the people involved are so young. "They don't know that tomorrow is not even promised to these kids, but they act like they don't know it and they don't care, so ain't nothing I can do, but pray," said Alexander.
