LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – On a holiday meant to be a national day of service to honor an assassinated Civil Rights leader several Louisville residents worked to celebrate a man's dream and keep it alive.

Monday morning the 42nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Motorcade and Rally paraded through downtown Louisville.

Several agencies and groups participated in the event calling for an end to violence as they made their way down Broadway to the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church.

Several University of Louisville students spent the day giving back  by volunteering around the city at places including the Parkland Boys and Girls Club and  the Portland Community Center.

The Jefferson County Teachers Association also got in the holiday spirit. Fifteen teachers rolled up their sleeves and picked up paint brushes to give the Shelby Park Community Center a fresh look.

The teachers also encouraged their students to give back during their day off.
