LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Louisville has never hosted the Kentucky high school girls' basketball championship games, and it's been 20 years since the city hosted the boys' high school basketball championships.
It's been 17 years since Louisville hosted the Kentucky high school baseball championship games and six years since Louisville hosted the Kentucky high school football championship games.
For the largest city in the Commonwealth and one relatively easy to get to, this is not an ideal situation.
At least one of these signature events should be in Louisville. Why not football next year, and the Girls' Sweet 16 the following year? Contractually, that is when those two championships become available.
Louisville has more than capably hosted Kentucky High School Athletic Association championships in track and field, volleyball, swimming and football. It's time to host football again and girls' basketball for the first time.
The first weekend in December is available for Papa John's Cardinal Stadium to host the football games. Enthusiasm for women's basketball is at an all time high in Louisville, with the Cardinals basketball team making a second straight push for a national championship. Capitalize on that enthusiasm and showcase the KYC Yum! Center to some of the best high school girls' players and their families?
Community support is needed to seal the deal – from ticket sales to discount hotel accommodations. Louisville should bid on both and push to make it happen. The payback would be worth it.
