LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A Louisville man is facing charges after being accused of stealing metal grates from the grounds of a Jefferson County elementary school.

Just after 10 a.m. January 21, Louisville Metro police officers were dispatched on a call of a suspicious person at Brandies Elementary School, 2817 W. Kentucky. The caller said someone was stealing metal from the school. Police found four metal grates from the school in a nearby trash can.

After getting a description of the man from a witness, police found Anthony Shanks, 52, about a block away from the school. According to police, Shanks admitted to leaving the grates in the trash can with the intent to steal them.

Shanks, who told police he took the metal to scrap it to buy food and pay his utility bills, was booked on a charge of theft by unlawful taking over $500.
