NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE) – Two families lost everything when their New Albany home caught fire late Thursday night.

Around 11:45, a fire broke out at the duplex located at Clark and Chartres Street, just off Vincennes.

Second floor residents said they saw sparks flying from the breaker box, igniting the fire in their unit. According to those residents, they told their landlord about the problem. He advised them to stay somewhere else for the night and that he would call an electrician in the morning.

The first floor residents didn't find out about the problem until firefighters and police arrived at their door.
