LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A Bullitt County woman has been charged in a hit-and-run accident that left a pedestrian dead.
Kayla Wafford, 29, of Mt. Washington, Kentucky, was arrested January 5 in Montgomery County. She is charged with leaving the scene of an accident without stopping to render aid and tampering with physical evidence.
According to an arrest warrant, Wafford was the driver of a car that struck Kristopher Caudill on March 12, 2013 at Bardstown Road and Jefferson Avenue in Fern Creek. Louisville Metro Police said Caudill was intoxicated and was hit by the car while walking along the dark roadway. He died at University Hospital from his injuries.
The warrant says after hitting Caudill, Wafford took the car out of Jefferson County. A tip led police to the vehicle and investigators said debris at the accident scene matched Wafford's car.
When questioned by police, the suspect admitted she was driving the car that day, but gave multiple stories about how the damage to the car occurred. The warrant states Wafford said to the investigating detective, "Why would a person be in the roadway anyway?"
Wafford is currently being held in the Montgomery County Regional Jail.
