The 17-year old shot by police today has a long juvenile record, including resisting arrest and theft and the youth had run away from home on numerous occasions, even spending time in the Hale Kipa shelter for at-risk youth in the past two weeks.
The teen is accused of pulling a kitchen knife on three officers who responded to Roosevelt High School to pick him up. The teen was not a current student there, but police sources say he showed up to register. He was reported as a runaway from Hale Kipa when he appeared at the school. He also has a history of mental issues.
Hawaii News Now is not naming the teen because he is a juvenile.
School administrators called police because the student became disorderly. When three officers arrived, HPD says the teen punched two of the officers and started slashing a third. One officer fired two shots, hitting the teen in the arm.
The teenager was taken to the hospital where he remains in serious condition; police say he will be charged with three counts of attempted murder.
The police officers were not seriously hurt.
Immediately after the incident, the school that has an enrollment of nearly 1,400 was put into lock down.
The Department of Education says robocalls notified parents that there was a situation but that all students were safe.
Many parents of students reported not having been officially notified of an incident nearly an hour after the incident was first reported, sources tell Hawaii News Now.
"In the beginning of every school year, there is an emergency contact list," says Donalyn Dela Cruz, of the DOE, "Whatever number was placed on that emergency contact list, that's the number that gets notified."
Students were released at 10 Tuesday morning and school was closed for the rest of the day.
