Will the cold weather kill off the Emerald Ash Borer?

AVON, OH (WOIO) -

For about the past 10 years the Emerald Ash Borer has been killing Ash trees in Ohio. It migrated from Michigan after it was mistakenly brought over to the United States from Asia, probably in shipping materials.

Could this extreme cold weather kill it off?

"They've been around for hundreds of millions of years and they're pretty focused on how to survive. And, they do survive," says Petitti's Horticulturist Paul Mendezoff.

At 20-below actual temperature, it's believed about 50-percent of the Ash Borer would be killed off. At 30 below, maybe 90-percent.

"As it gets colder basically their blood starts to chemically convert over to, become like an antifreeze in them, so they won't freeze to death," adds Mendezoff. "To really knock back the invasive insect, we would have to see a deep freeze of 30 below for at least a week."
