1934 'Kosair Kid' dies after battle with dementia

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A man who was so inspired by the medical care he received as a child that he went into medicine himself, has died.

Doctor James Hurt, 91, died on January 26 after battling dementia.

Hurt was diagnosed with a bone infection in 1934, when he was 11 years old, and was referred to referred to the Kosair Crippled Children Hospital where he underwent three major operations in 10 months.

After spending years as a patient in Kosair, Hurt attended the University of Kentucky and University of Louisville Medical Schools before becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

He maintained close ties with Kosair throughout his life and volunteered his services to patients at the Kosair Juvenile Prosthetic Clinic.

A memorial service for Hurt will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, at Kosair Charities.
