RADCLIFF, KY (WAVE) – The first grade class at Radcliff Elementary School spent their day helping one of their classmates who is fighting cancer. Sam Adams has not been able to attend school this year after he had a relapse from his Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia this summer. That's why his class has started a fundraiser to help.

The project is called "A Million Wishes for Sam" Because Sam always wanted to know what a million wishes looked like. Ms. Shandis Rose, Sam's teacher, and her students decided they would show him - in a million pennies.

Students decorated tin cans with 100 stickers, in honor of the 100th day of school. The cans will be placed in businesses throughout Radcliff and Elizabethtown. The class aims at collecting one million pennies, $10,000, to help pay for Sam's medical bills and treatments.

"You know where these kids are counting stickers; he's counting how many treatments he's had," Rose said. "You know when these kids are sitting here and learning words and how to read, he's just fighting to breathe."

Sam has been fighting the cancer since 2009. His mother said recovery has been rough and he's had some setbacks but they're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

"We have patriot pride here and Sam is a patriot," said Rose. "He may not have seen the inside of this classroom but he's still a patriot so we're going to support him in any way we can."

Rose said she doesn't if or when Sam can return to school this school year, but his cubby is held with a monkey stuffed animal and his desk is waiting for him when he does.
