MUHLENBERG COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - There was barely an open seat at the Calvary Baptist Church of Central City on Friday. Friends, family and even strangers made it a point to come out, join together and pray for the Watson family.

In the front of the sanctuary nine candles shined as nine names were read. Nikki and Chad Watson and their nine children were all inside their home when it caught fire around 2 a.m. Thursday. Only Chad and daughter Kylie, 11, were able to escape.

"Chad and Nikki had not only a big family in number, but a big family in spirit," said Muhlenberg County Sheriff Curtis McGhee.

Through prayer and song the small community tried to understand the magnitude of why they were here. "I had to be here," said Patti Webb, family friend.

Words just didn't seem fitting. "I don't know what to say, but I know that our community is deeply saddened," said McGhee.

The community prayed for the lives lost and for those saved. "Nikki was a wonderful mom. She loved those kids, those kids were her pride and joy," said Cassie Bryant, a relative of the family.

As Chad Watson fights for his life in the hospital, many know he did everything he could. "He walked into that house according to witnesses, three times frantically searching for his children," said Adam Brown, Chad Watson's cousin.

As for Kylie, it's now clear through messages written to family members she understands what happened.

"She wrote down, ‘Is me and my dad the only ones that made it?' And Aunt Tammy told her," said Brown. "She knew, she had to have it confirmed and she's got peace tonight."

Those who attended the vigil said the only way to get through this tragedy is to lean on faith - and this community will, as well as each other hoping tomorrow will bring a brighter day.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. Both Chad and Kylie Watson remain in Nashville hospitals in critical, but stable condition.
