United Airlines will cut 470 jobs; employees react to the news

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Darell Spencer is an automotive executive who has been flying on United Airlines out Cleveland for 25 years. In fact he's a member of United's Million Mile Club but now that United is cutting back some 60 percent of its daily flights, Mr. Spencer might be forced to find another airport.

"The nearest one is about 20 miles and the next one is two hours away," says Spencer.

United also announced some 470 employees will be let go. Many United employees said they were blind sided by the news late tonight.  One employee on condition of anonymity had this to say, "It's very upsetting.  We have a lot of people here who work for United, families and friends alike."

United reports Cleveland Hopkins Airport has not been profitable for a decade. The airline also stated it has sustained tens of millions of dollars in annual losses that it could no longer afford to absorb.  The flight reductions are scheduled to begin in April and the elimination of some 470 jobs is scheduled to begin in June.
