LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Early morning drivers had a difficult time on the roads Monday. Expressways and major roads were covered in snow while secondary roads were even worse. Crews said by the time they plowed a street the beginning of their plow path would be covered in snow again because it was falling so fast.

We're expecting freezing rain and potential snow Tuesday night and Wednesday. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says they have a plan and will try to not let roads get as bad as they did Monday morning.

"We're probably not going to be able to brine before the next event because rain has to be forecasted first that would wash the brine away," said Andrea Clifford, a KYTC spokeswoman. "Even if it wasn't raining, temperatures play a factor in whether or not we would be able to brine, because it may be too cold."

Clifford said they will be watching the forecast and have crews ready to be brought in at any moment.

"If we can't brine then we basically start salting whenever frozen precipitation starts coming down. We monitor the air temperature as well as the pavement temperature," Clifford said. "Sometimes we'll go out in advance and put a light coat of salt on the bridge decks because that's what freezes first."

Clifford said there's not much advance work with ice. They need some sort of precipitation for the salt or it will just bounce off before the ice comes and waste the material.

KYTC has ordered 21,000 tons of salt that will come in this week but if something were to happen she said they have enough salt on hand to deal with the winter weather Tuesday night and this upcoming weekend.
