DEFIANCE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Crews in Toledo aren't the only ones preparing for this winter weather. Leaders in Defiance have a plan, too.

Mother Nature has not been kind the last few weeks, and she might not even be done yet. So crews in Defiance are working hard Tuesday, prepping for any winter storm on its way.

"We're putting a lot of liquid de-icing down today to try and get ahead of it," explained DJ Zeedyk, assistant service director in Defiance.

City service leaders say the work to keep roads safe begins long before the snow falls. On Tuesday, they're working on their trucks, making sure everything is up to par. Repairs are taken care of now so they don't have to worry about it later.

"We don't want to spend our plowing time doing repairs," said Zeedyk.

They're also filling trucks with salt and trying to determine the best way to use their limited supply.

"With the shortage that we have, we have enough salt to get through a couple storms, and hopefully that will get us through to spring," said Zeedyk.

If you live in a residential area, city leaders say they're planning on saving the salt for major roads, but will drive their plows through. Officials want to remind drivers to take it slow so they can do their job, after Mother Nature does hers.

For the past few years, officer involved shootings have led to unprecedented protests. Backlash and violence at times have been so severe, some police said it made them hesitate or even avoid some actions on the job. It's called the Ferguson effect - a reference to the Missouri town where an officer shot Michael Brown in 2014.
