LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Gavin Howard is not like most 8 year-olds, his first thought is often of others.
"He's got a big heart, he'd rather help somebody else besides his self," William Howard, Gavin's dad said.
Gavin was riding in the car with his mother three years ago and they were listening the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital radioathon. When Jenny Howard turned around, she saw Gavin with tears in his eyes. He wanted to help the kids.
The first year he took his birthday money, all $43, and gave it the radio station putting on the event. The next year, he asked family members for donations around the holidays and raised $322. This year the family is selling T-shirts. The original goal was $1000, but they are well ahead of that.
"It feels really good, and to help the kids, I mean, it's awesome," Gavin said.
"He just loves giving and helping people and so it's kind of made us all like that," Jenny Howard added.
T-shirts are $10, sweatshirts $15 and hoodies $20.
